Advent: a sonnet

I had the honor and pleasure of teaming up with illustrator Jonny Jimison for The Rabbit Room‘s collaborative Advent project pairing poets and artists. Jonny did a fantastic job illustrating my sonnet:

Also, here’s something fun: a podcast I recorded with Joshua Klos of Refracted Reality. It’s an audio version of my essay “In Praise of the House Party,” which originally appeared on the Art House America blog back in December of 2013. I had a great time recording it–and Joshua worked wonders with music and sound effects. I hope you enjoy it! 🙂

It’s almost Christmas, friends–can you believe it?

  1. Dear Lanier, just to say that your Golden Hours blog has been a true Christmas gift this year. All sorts of upheavals are happening at my home and workplace, and having a place to dip into simple joy and beauty and the depths of faith has been infinitely refreshing. Merry Christmas.

  2. Dear Lanier,

This sonnet is SO beautiful. Sacred Advent words. They feel like holy ground.

After reading it at the Rabbit Room, I copied the gorgeous second stanza onto the inside of some Christmas cards I was mailing. It says everything I feel this Christmas.

And the final stanza is a perfect prayer for weeping Syrians (and for Berliners tonight too).

    God bless.
